Hip hop sampling?

What do you think? Do u consider it stealing?

I know there is alot of hardcore rock fans that hate that. Or are you fine with it?

In my opinion, it's a way that these 2 genre's can co-exist. Hip hop is more about the rappers lyrics. And the beat helps push it along. Some rappers can come up with a pure version of their beats, but sometimes a rock song can actually work well hip hop if used well. And also I like it when they dont change the singer or the song.

I think the real stealing is when you have someone from the same genre. Like for example, some rock band makes a good song 10 years ago, today, some new generation band makes the same some. Basically remakes the song. No originality.

However in hip hop. The creativity mainly goes into the artist's written lyrics. So it's not stealing in my opinion. Both are different.

Hip hop sampling?
When done the right way, sampling is an artistic way to create new soundscapes. Guys like DJ Premier and Pete Rock are masters of it. Kanye West is another one who does a pretty good job with it.

Unfortunately, a lot of producers have gotten really lazy with sampling. Puffy is especially egregious in the way he does it. He basically just plays the "sample" as an instrumental, maybe adding some drums to make it more hip hop. That's just laziness.

If you really want to see how sampling should properly be utilized, check out the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique or De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising.
Reply:In my opinion(and I'm going to keep this simple and sweet)

Sampling is one of the most beautiful ways in which Music....relives through itself.

Sure if you don't clear the sample and produce a song commercially, it's messed it on the sole purpose that....it's not your original music lol.

But at the end of the day....sampling is great way music evolves, grows and recreates within itself.
Reply:Sampling is defiently not stealing! and people saying that should try to make a sampled beat for a minute and they will understand how hard it is.. hip hop is not just about samples, it's about creativity, musicality, lyricism...etc..

you can listen to kanye west productions for example, and listen to the original song, and check the differnce.. see the work he does on it.. not to mention legendary producers like Dj Premier or Jay dilla..
Reply:yea i think its ok as long as the lyrical content is not copied.

for example jay-z bites off many rappers like biggie, nas, and snoop on his lines...

but as long as lyrics are original, then sampling beats and stuff is koo.

...and i dont really like the rock/rap fusion but its koo when done right...

i kinda like the oldies and classical music mixed with rap.
Reply:For real i do not like rock i tried but i cant and idk about them stealing but ur right about hip-hop u just luv the beat and the words ppl think is dead u gotta look harder and u will see hip-hop is the best

(for me) its my life like reggaeton and R%26amp;B =]
Reply:I've always compared Sampling to painting a picture... you've got your easel (MPC... Beat Machine...) and your different colors on it (samples). People might look at the original song/color as being plain or not their style but what really matters is what you do once you start painting (Making the Beat)... cuz what started out as red, green, yellow, and blue can end up blending into something that in no way shape or form resembles those original colors (Turning Rock, Jazz, Etc into Hip Hop). Thats what the beauty is in painting, and thats what the beauty is in sampling.
