What is hip hop?
Rap is one of the elements of hip hop. But now that term is now used to classify the watered down garbage you hear on the radio. According to the teachings of KRS-ONE to be considered hip hop you must fully represent all elements of hip hop including, graph art, breaking, D.J.ing, emceeing (rapping). A lot of artists now days in no way reference or pay homage to these factors that created hip hop. They just talk on a track shoulder lean and there out. Hip hop is life and a passion for a culture that has been used for self expression for over 25 years. This doesn't mean if you don't do all of these things you are not hip hop just as long as you have an understanding of these different elements and the history of the old school you then will be considered hip hop. Sadly the music part is going down hill nowadays. Your list was very accurate and I gotta give you props for mentioning my homies Binary Star who are great live. Here's some real hip hop artists that I strongly suggest you check out.

Brother Ali (Best Album of 2007)

Atmosphere

Murs of Living Legends

Blackstar

MF Doom

Little Brother

Common

People Under the Stairs

Hieroglyphics

Mos Def Talib Kweli

Nas (still dope after all these years with the exception of Nastradamus)

Saigon

anything produced by Pete Rock or DJ Premier check out old Gangstaar too
Reply:Hip Hop? Beastie Boys, Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Eyedea, Herbaliser (1st album, good hip-hop instrumental), MF Doom-Special Herbs 9-0, Wiseguys, Atmosphere, early Fat Joe (up to Don Cartegena he was ILL!!), Necro, Beatnuts, early Eminem, Def Jux Records (if you like abstract, i'm still iffy on it), Heiroglyphics (iffy), you know...

Hip hop is truthful, progressive to your soul. Hip hop is underground. Hip Hop is indie.
Reply:nah, it's all hip-hop, a lot of it just sucks. That's like saying that 80's hair metal isn't metal, when it is, but the people don't want it be associated with metal because it's terrible. But Ludacris or Eminem aren't even bad, I don't know why you would group them with those other fools. And I'd say Masters Of The Universe is the best hip-hop album of all time, and One Be Lo/OneManArmy is the best emcee of all time.

Kevin B, I would love to hear your reasoning for saying Hieroglyphics are iffy. Wtf? Hip-hop does not mean conscious. You don't need to have a message to be hip-hop. Hell, I'd much rather listen to the latest Fabolous than the latest KRS-One (not talking about his older stuff, back when it was fresh), they are both saying the same old ****, at least Fabolous has skills. You can't just choose which artists are true hip-hop based on how much money they have or how underground they are. Shoot, Talib Kweli and Mos Def aren't even underground anymore, does that mean they are no longer hip-hop? Big L never had a message, does that mean he isn't hip-hop? If Hieroglyphics (who do have a message, so really what the **** are you talking about?) aren't hip-hop, then no one on your list is hip-hop.
Reply:Hip hop dance: Breakdance and various forms of street dance;

Hip Hop is a way of life or a culture that is bigger than music.
Reply:Hip-Hop is a form of expression no matta how it comes out looks sounds feels etc....... All the commercial ish u hear on the radio and tv is watered down to a formula that sells. So its all hip hop its just watered down. True heads wont agree...but the its the truth by definition. and Lil Wayne is defintely hip-hop...he makes his loot with the commercial music ish ...but he can freestlye off the top of his head.....u have to respect that if not then usa just a hater.
Reply:lupe fiasco

Jay- Z

Kanye
Reply:Uh... Jay-z, The black eyed Peas...
Reply:Talib Kweli is a good example, who by the way, sounds remarkably like Eminem in his early years. Explain to me again why eminem isn't hip hop?

If u dont know who talib kweli is, look him up on Youtube right quick, and any perception u have of what hip hop is will be blown.
Reply:Luda- changed his flow and what he raps about- hip-hop

Young Jeezy- can say things that make you think-hip-hop

Yung Joc-can rap about something stupid and make it mean something thats important to him or some people-hip-hop
Reply:the best kind of music there is no questions asked hands down
Reply:lil wayne is definitely NOT hip hop. Props to who made the above list.

other real hip hop artists include

Apathy, Louis Logic, Jedi Mind Tricks, Celph Titled, J-Dilla, Evidence, MF Doom, De La Soul, talib Kweli, and many more.

hip hop is not on TV
Reply:You all got it wrong. Hip hop is a movement a culture. It's the way you live the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the friends you keep. The way you wear your hair. But not to mention your knowledge of hip hop and where it came from. And how they said it wouldn't be. It's not one specific artist. That's stupid. That's like saying George Bush is the defenition of America. And being hip hop is not being Black. The knowledge and passion of hip hop is in your individual self. They said it would never last but it's taking over the hood, the suburbs and over seas. Hip Hop is a MOVEment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:i dont know ashanti?
