I honestly think there's a difference. Why does everyone group all black urban music into one big category? Why aren't there more radio stations that play just hip hop without the R%26amp;B? Hip hop, rap, R%26amp;B, crunk, and hip Pop (like the blackeyed peas) should all be separate. You don't group Garth Brooks with Maroon 5! But besides the radio problem, rap and hip hop have to be different because even the people in the industry separate themselves that way like Krs One, Mos Def, %26amp; Lupe consider their music as hip hop. Hip hop is also the culture itself but you cannot consider certain artists as rap. What else would u call it, if not hip hop music because it represents the culture in its purest form?
Are Rap and Hip Hop the same thing?
Rap is a word only applied to music. Hip Hop is also a musical style like rap, but more than that Hip Hop is a lifestyle.
Rap is what we see on BET/MTV and hear on the radio everyday. Rap is the mainstream/pop style of Hip Hop. It's mainstream because it fronts an image that record companies have used to sell music for decades. It's the newest version of the 'sex, drugs %26amp; rock and roll' image just changed slightly to fit the "inner-city". Rap also doesn't require any real musical talent. Most beats are only 4 bars long, made on a computer, and looped up to play over and over again for 5 minutes. Anybody can do this today, even a child. But in the rap world, this makes you a "producer". That music is ok for the clubs only, but should not be the standard.
Hip Hop is more than just rapping about hoes, who you shot, and money you don't have. Hip Hop emcees flow for the art of it whether that means mic battling like Canibus, or just talking about real things like Common. Hip Hop also includes more musical talent than mainstream rap.There are groups who can actually create their own beats without a computer, and there are groups who can play instruments as well as a small handful of DJs still out there. These are the true Hip Hop artists.
Here is my recipe to make a mainstream rap song:
1. Before you even write your lyrics, you need a catchy chorous/hook. It doesn't even have to make sense just as long as it 'sounds' cool. Example: "This is why I'm hot."
2. You either sample somebody else's song, or you get a computer and loop up a VERY simple 4 bar beat and play it over and over. This way you don't have to bother with little things like: knowing music, playing instruments, or just being creative.
3. Now you're ready to write your flows, but they MUST include the following: violence, putting down our women, and talking about things that you or your fans will never afford. But so what, it's the image that sells right?
Ok, so now you have your pop/mainstream beat and hook rap song. You're coming up now. And now there's a couple of guys in suits who want to sign you because you got 'street cred'. The only 'hood' these guys know is the one on their cars, but these guys claim to 'know' what sells, and they're willing to put YOU on as long as you keep making music like that. So you sign. Now that they've had a chance to BUY you some airtime on the tv and radio (because PAYOLA-that's when music companies bribe radio stations to play certain artists' music- is VERY REAL), you're getting a little fame, so they want you to make a video now. But don't worry! Just add steps 4 and 5 to the 3 steps above:
Step 4. Rent out the most expensive things you can find. Cars, jewelery, clothes, a fancy hall, go all out. This makes the rapper look like he's actually living the lifestyle he's fronting to us. So what if it all goes back to the store after the video shoot is over. It's about what LOOKS cool.
And finally step 5. no video is complete without naked women. They don't even have to dance. Just as long as they're there and they look trashy.
Rap is just the new version of sex drugs and rock%26amp; roll, see? If you don't believe me, just turn on your TV. The difference between that and Hip Hop, is the difference between what's on TV and what's actually REAL LIFE.

Is hip hop finally dying out?
I'm 25, I really hate the way hip hop was forced upon my generation. From the time I was 18, I just hated it, and being forced into it made me hate it even more. I was never one to watch MTV because it was nothing but hip hop. Fortunately, here in South Texas I was able to get Mexican music channels and stay away from listening to that dreadful music. The clubs were filled with hip hop, so I had to cross the border to be able to dance to another beat. Mexico and sometimes gay clubs seemed to be the only way to stay away from that music. I only listened very few radio stations on my car over the last 7 years; the rock station, the pop station, the 80's rock station, and Mexican radio stations. Everything else played hip hop. I'm starting not to listen to hip hop everywhere.
Is it possible? Is that stupid trend finally over?

Israel women trafficking soars
Between 3,000 and 5,000 women have been smuggled into Israel in the past four years to work as prostitutes, according to a parliamentary inquiry.
The report described how the women are sold at public auctions for as much as $10,000 and forced to work up to 18 hours a day.
On average the women receive only three percent of the money they earn from prostitution, the report said.
Most of the women are from the former Soviet Union.
Many are raped and beaten as they are smuggled into Israel over the Egyptian border, the inquiry found.

Zehava Galon, of the opposition Yahad Party, presented the report to the speaker of the Knesset on Wednesday.
"We began this inquiry to investigate the extent of this phenomenon and raise political awareness of their plight and the brutal nature of the trafficking of women in this time of globalisation," said Ms Galon.
She said the biggest challenge in addressing the plight of women in the sex trade was changing the attitudes of the Israeli public and police.
The inquiry also criticised judges for passing light sentences, sometimes only community service, for men running prostitution rings.
The report called for minimum jail terms of 16 years for those convicted. London-based rights group Amnesty International and the US State Department have also reported an alarming increase in prostitution rings in Israel.

Most mainstream rap today only rap about cars, money, girls, and how "gangster" they are. I'm only 13, and I HATE the bull-**** mainstream rap today. You need to stop listening to this mainstream crap and start listening to some Underground Hip-Hop. The real sh*t like Canibus, The Roots, KRS-One, MF Doom, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Planet Asia, Rakim, RJD2, Talib Kweli, Jedi Mind Tricks, Nujabes, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, and Immortal Technique. Most people who like Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne only like them, because they get all their information about Hip-Hop from MTV/BET/RADIO. They don't know much about Hip-Hop. They don't know the history. All they know is what they see on TV and what they hear on the radio. Mainstream rap is such a joke! Alternative Rap is where the TRUE rappers are! Anybody else agree?

The best songs are never on radio hits. Everybody is trying so hard to make themselves RICH first then the hardest rapper out second. Get your money, man get it then remember that you talking to thousands to millions and be a rapper (represent Hip-Hop more than take away from it)

East Coast Hip Hop Bias?
It's funny to me how the East Coast spins hip hop to it's favor. Back in the late 80's a huge amount of the East Coast rappers were wearing baggy pants with funny high top fades dancing and rapping. MC Hammer came out doing the same thing. The East Coast had no problem with this until Hammer went Diamond. Then he wasn't real hip hop. Now I see the East Coast hatin on the South. Hip Hop belongs to everyone not just the East Coast. Just imagine if the south said that everyone who made jazz and blues were not true artist because they didn't come from the South. Hip Hop is the "ONLY" genre of music that has this bias. How is Nelly not hip hop but Biz Markie is hip hop. Why does Lil John get bothered for being a rapping DJ. But Swizz Beats gets a free pass. They only say something when someone not from the East blows up. That's pure Hatoration
East Coast Hip Hop Bias?
I think its wack when one part of hip hop hates on another part. Like ny hating on the south is stupid. Let them do what they do you do what you do and it will all be good. NY is the birthplace of hip hop but it doesnt make you the king of hip hop. It changes from time to time. West coast, East cost, Southside, Midwest whateva its all hip hop. Stop the hating.

Anyone that thinks Hip Hop is based on one "Coast" has a problem. I'm form NYC and we (me and everyone that I know) respect all types of Rap from all over. You also have East Coast Rappers getting on remixes with Southern Artist. I do know some people (in NYC) that feel Southern Rap at this point is a bit repetitive (snap, lean, rock, shake, money, girls, cars ect.), but not because it's from the South; it's the content, and that goes for some East Coast artist as well. Ask any East coast hip hop head about OutKast, Arrested Development and the Geto Boys and most likely they will not say anything bad.

The West got its due. The South is now getting its due. You're right, no one should be hatin' on the success coming out of regions outside of New York. But there's a flip side to your question. I think New York don't get enough props for CREATING a culture that now everyone can get their own little piece of.
